Longtime Independence Mission Schools supporter and violinist Helen McNutt was inspired after seeing a recent photo on the Independence Mission Schools website of a St. Malachy student playing the same instrument that had brought her so much joy over the years. The moment sparked an idea—Helen thought of one of her own violins that she wasn’t playing as often.

Helen reached out to St. Malachy Principal Betsy Rafferty to share her desire to donate the violin and scheduled a visit to the school. During her time there, she met Phoenix, a seventh-grade student who had recently stopped playing the violin simply because he didn’t have an instrument of his own.

After a brief conversation, Helen placed her violin in Phoenix’s hands, giving him the opportunity to continue pursuing his passion. Both musicians were overjoyed. Today, Phoenix continues to play the violin, his love of music renewed through this simple act of generosity.

Across the Independence Mission Schools network, moments like this, where generosity meets opportunity, happen more often than you think. If you have a unique gift idea, just as Helen did, please email [email protected], and a member of our team will be in touch.
